Playing With Shadows

For experimentation purposes we played around with using different objects and hand movements to create shadows on a backdrop to see what effects we could create at different distances. We also wanted to try to create different textures which are lacking from our other animations such as the paper cut and chalkboard ones.

We took a series of photographs created using found objects such as a plaster head and wool as you can see here.

We also took a series using Shannon s hair. The further from the light the sharper and more defined, the closer to the light and the image became more blurred and undefined.

A series of shots containing both Shannon s hair and hands - fingers splayed at the side of her head.

Hand Movements:  Again sharper and more defined further away from the light source.

Hand Movements: Less defined, blurred and shapeless when hands are moved close to the light source.

Hand  Movements: Hands reaching out... to help? to capture? or in self defence?

Evaluation

I really like the textures that can be created when working in shadow the hair shots are really unique and the texture on the the head clear and defined. I also think the difference between the sharp defined shadows and the blurred ones could be really useful when telling a story to help distinguish depth and distance. MY favorites were the less defined hand movements I find these soft flowing blurred shapes really spooky and think they capture the imagination.
